MONASH HEART HACK

Monash Heart Hack is a dynamic student team dedicated to the cutting edge development of artificial hearts. As part of a continuous global challenge organised by the International Society for Mechanical Circulatory Support (ISMCS), the team focuses on designing, evaluating, and building innovative cardiac devices. Our mission is to blend advanced engineering with clinical research to create a viable artificial heart.

OUR TEAM

Monash Heart Hack Our Team

Our team consists of over 50 passionate members from various academic backgrounds, structured into 7 specialised sub-teams. These include Motor Systems, Control Systems, Power Systems, Cardiovascular Simulator, Fluid Dynamics, Levitating systems and Compliance & Fittings. Each group brings unique expertise, working collaboratively to tackle the complexities of artificial heart development. Established in mid-2022, our team is committed to pushing the boundaries of medical technology.

COMPETITION

Each year, Monash Heart Hack competes in the prestigious competition hosted by the International Society for Mechanical Circulatory Support (ISMCS). This annual event draws talented teams from across the globe, each aiming to advance the field of mechanical circulatory support through innovation and engineering excellence. Our participation not only allows us to showcase our developments but also to engage with and learn from other leaders in the field.

OUR WORK

At Monash Heart Hack, our work is intricately divided between the electrical and mechanical departments, each handling pivotal aspects of artificial heart development. The electrical department comprises the Motor Systems, Control Systems, and Power Systems teams. They focus on designing a custom motor tailored for our specific requirements, developing control systems to manage motor speed and create a user-friendly GUI, and designing power systems responsible for energising and sustaining the entire unit.

Meanwhile, the mechanical department includes the Cardiovascular Simulator, Fluid Dynamics, and Compliance & Fittings teams. This department is tasked with constructing the heart's casing, analysing fluid movements to optimally design impellers, and ensuring the entire assembly fits and functions within compliance standards. Together, these teams ensure a holistic approach to building a reliable and efficient artificial heart, combining their expertise to address the challenges of simulating and supporting heart functions.

WHO WE ARE

COMING SOON

Seeing the potential the of the previous prototype from with the resounding results from last years performance at IMSEC, placing 2nd, the team plans to have a full functional prototype complete come IMSEC 2024. This prototype aims to implement medically safe materials, an internal battery pack and have the prototype function with artificial blood substitute.
